Gendarmerie of the Republic of San Marino
The Gendarmerie Corps is part of the military and is one of the law enforcement agencies of the Republic of San Marino.
The Gendarmerie, founded in 1842, is the security and judicial police authority, administrative police, responsible for public entertainment, weapons, and foreigners. For recruitment, status, and promotion of personnel, as well as administration and logistics, honorary services, and escorts, it depends on the Secretariat of State for Foreign and Political Affairs, while for public order and security, it depends on the Most Excellent Regency.
For a long period of time in the last century, from 1921 to 1936 and from 1962 to 1984, thanks to a cooperation agreement with Italy, the Gendarmerie Corps was composed of Carabinieri officers selected on a rotating basis from those serving in the Royal Carabinieri Legion of Ancona and the Carabinieri Legion of Bologna, respectively, and was placed under the command of a Carabinieri officer specially appointed by the General Command of the Carabinieri. These officers wore the Gendarmerie uniform while performing their duties in San Marino.
Today, the Corps consists of a Central Command and nine Brigade Commands located in the respective nine Castles into which the territory of the Republic is administratively divided. The Command makes use of specialized Sections and Units to support the Brigades. Gendarmerie personnel also perform the functions of Director as well as surveillance and custody of the State Prison.
