Battaglione San Marco

The 1st Regiment “San Marco” is a military unit of marine infantry under the Italian Navy, officially established in 1919 when, on March 25 of that year, it adopted the name "San Marco".
Over the decades, the men of the San Marco, also called "marò" (from the bureaucratic abbreviation written "mar.o" for "sailor"), were from time to time organized into battalion or regiment. The regiment's motto, "Per mare, per terram", is the same as that of the British Royal Marines. From 1 March 2013, together with the 2nd and 3rd Regiment, the Caorle Schools Battalion and the Landing Vehicles Group, it constitutes the "San Marco" Marine Brigade, that is the landing force of the Navy and the department renamed the 1st "San Marco" Regiment.
