Structure of the ILU Code

The ILU (Intermodal Loading Unit) code is the standard European identifier for intermodal loading units, such as semi-trailers and swap bodies, which travel by road and rail.
The code consists of three main parts, totalling 11 characters:

  • Owner key (ILU-key): 4 letters (e.g. ABC U) assigned by the central register managed by the UIRR (International Union of Combined Road-Rail Transport Companies).
  • serial number: 6 digits freely chosen by the owner to identify the individual unit.
  • Check digit: 1 final digit calculated to verify the correctness of the entire code

Functions and Requirements

  • Mandatory use: From 1 July 2014, only units bearing an ILU or BIC code are accepted for combined transport in Europe.
  • Traceability: Enables automatic identification via OCR readers at terminals, optimising loading and unloading operations.
  • Application: The code must be clearly visible on both sides of the loading unit.
