Danzas Transport
Danzas was a shipping company founded in 1878. The Swiss company, headquartered in Basel and of French origin, was acquired by Deutsche Post in 1999. The Danzas brand was kept alive until 2006 and then permanently eliminated following the completion of Deutsche Post's acquisition of the US company DHL.
A bit of history
After the Battle of Waterloo in 1815, the French officer Louis Danzas, whose original surname was d'Anzas, entered into a partnership with Michel L'Evêque-Moll in Bourglibre near Basel.
The company soon began operating in shipping. After the Franco-Prussian War, the headquarters were moved to Switzerland. In 1878, it became Danzas & Cie. and on January 1, 1903, it became a joint-stock company. Branches were opened in France, Italy, and Germany.
In Germany, a branch office was opened in Ludwigshafen am Rhein in 1901. In 1919, it became Danzas GmbH, with its headquarters in Mainz during the occupation of the Rhineland. The headquarters were moved to Mannheim just a year later, and in 1949 to Frankfurt am Main. By 1965, there were 30 branches in Germany.
In 1999, it was acquired by Deutsche Post and Danzas Holding was created. It became part of Deutsche Post World Net. With a rebranding to DHL, Deutsche Post EuroExpress and Danzas became DHL brands. The Danzas brand operated until January 2006 with DHL Danzas Air & Ocean, which was then incorporated into DHL Global Forwarding. After the dissolution of DHL Danzas Air & Ocean, the Danzas brand remained only as Danzas Messen GmbH and Danzas Lebensmittelverkehr GmbH. These later became DHL Trade Fairs & Events (TFE) and DHL FoodServices.
